With over 20 years of triathlon racing experience, Kirk Nelson began fitting bikes for his coaching clients in 2011 and started the "Independent Bike Builder" (IBB) venture in 2012. Originally an independent side business operating out of his kitchen, the project grew through word-of-mouth to serve national and international clients. In October 2013, Kirk opened a shop in Ivins, Utah (still in the same location) as IBB Cyclery & Multisport.

Over the years, the business grew and more employees joined the team. The name was simplified to IBB Cyclery, and it continues the IBB FIT-->SPEC-->BUILD, 3-step process. This unique process has improved rider satisfaction through more than 1,000 fits and hundreds of custom frame-up builds for clients in nearly all 50 states and countries all around the world.

In May 2025, Service Manager Jon Houk bought IBB Cyclery from Kirk. Jon, building on the strong foundation Kirk established, is now leading IBB Cyclery into new and exciting directions, expanding services and offerings while maintaining the high standards of quality and customer care that IBB is known for.
