While the gearing of a 1X setup on a triathlon race bike does not work for everyone, it's hard to argue with the simplicity that a single front ring offers. Wide range 11-speed cassettes such as SRAM's 10-42 make riding 1X an option worth considering with approximately the same range found on a 52/36 double crank with 11-28 or 11-30 rear cassette.
The gear ratio of a 48-10 (4.8) is equivalent to riding downhill on a 53-11 (4.82) which is a decent-sized gear for most triathletes.
At the low end of the range, a 48-42 (1.14) is nearly equivalent to riding up steep hills on a 34-30 (1.13) or 36-32 (1.125)
Increasing the front Ring to a 50T gives these ratios:
50-10 (5.0) is equivalent to a whopping 55-11 (5.0) for downhills, while a 50-42 (1.19) is nearly equivalent to a 34-29 (1.17), 34-28 (1.21), or 36-30 (1.20)
However, the spacing BETWEEN gears may leave something to be desired for some of us......
